Postmodernism and Design

Postmodernism is a movement that began at the break of the 20th century. It was a revolt against the ideals of modernism itself. The movement is going on to this day. The thing about postmodernism is that it isn’t restricted as tightly as other movements. Postmodernism gave no brief for designers to go by and allowed them to explore varieties of colour, line, composition — the movement proved very successful and it’s ideals resonate in some of my own course work.

I enjoy a lot of the earlier postmodernist graphic design that was included in the lecture. Like the famed Marilyn Monroe Pop Art. The exploration of drastic colour contrast, and the breaking down of constructs is inspiring.

In my opinion, Postmodernism is still relevant but less and less. We’re seeing the reduction of bold colours and the use of more pastel, subtle colours in a lot of graphic and product design. I have no doubt that Postmodernism still has a place in society for a while to come.
