While browsing the internet for news stories, I came across an article published by NBC regarding President Trump and his views of a new book by author Bob Woodward. His views are anything but tender given that the book “contains astonishing anecdotes showing how top aides routinely went behind Trump’s back to thwart him and how little they trusted the president to do or say the right things, or make the appropriate decisions.” The ethics of this news story come from President Trump’s claim that the book, titled “Fear”, is nothing more than an excerpt made purely for the purpose of libel and the defamation of his standing as our president. In a recent Tweet regarding the novel, President Trump posted that “it’s a shame that someone can write an article or book, totally make up stories — and get away with it without retribution or cost.” President Trump goes on to say that he “Doesn’t know why Washington politicians don’t change libel laws.” While other politicians within President Trump’s cabinet did not wish to change libel laws; they were quoted denying a vast majority of the content released in the book, Its pages are depicting the White House as a “picture of chaos”. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders has gone on the record in saying that the depiction of the U.S. government in the book is a work of pure fiction, and she went on to say that the administration has been very successful in reaching a multitude of goals. They in do not feel the White House is at all a chaotic and unproductive environment. For the time being, the novel has not come under any scrutiny of being delayed in its release, and is set to be sold in book stores on September 11th. However with so many politicians denying the contents of the book, is it an example of Libel? Should the novel be questioned and reviewed for factual evidence? or should the focus be on the President and the White House to prove that the claims are false? This article brings many questions to the table.
