Hi reader. This being my first blog post, I feel the need to introduce myself. My name is Tony Kimathi, a 24 year old male who is passionate about technology and is in love with music.

I recently made it to the boot camp stage of the Andela 21 cohort cycle and words can’t describe how ecstatic I am. See, I first applied to Andela during cohort 17, after hearing about it from a friend of mine, and I did not make it. That did not deter or slow me down, as here I am months later, having a go at it again.

This being a post about my most recent challenging experience, let me tell you about my journey with music. I have always had a longing passion for music production that grew in me as time passed. The sequence of the drum patterns, cymbals and other percussion instruments always amazed me, but having never learnt about music ever in my life, I didn’t know where to start. So I googled it.

I came across several YouTube videos that recommended FL Studio as the music production software of choice. After installing it, I was taken aback by the multitude of knobs, controls and plugins there that discouraged me at first. I had no knowledge of music theory and I had never played an instrument before, so the tutorials I was watching were not of much help.

I continued struggling and just before I entertained thoughts of giving up, I came across this YouTube channel called ‘Internet Money’ that practically saved my dream. In their tutorials, they talk about life and self-help skills, in addition to the music stuff. They breakdown music theory to the fundamentals making it so easy to learn and then I began applying the principles taught and I gradually began understanding and getting better.

As of now I could safely say that my skill has significantly improved, and my confidence level is a bit higher. This is because I did not quit when faced with the challenges and obstacles, which would have been the easy way out. I know that I still have a lot of room for improvement and that if I continue applying myself, the only way to go is up.
