Advances in Artificial Intelligence compelled Microsoft to create guidelines for Human-AI interaction. The guidelines are divided into four sections, ‘Initially,’ ‘During Interaction,’ ‘When wrong,’ and ‘Over time.’ Youtube, can be argued, successfully utilises AI to improve its users experience. Here, I will be looking at Youtube’s AI features, and using these guidelines, will rate them from 1(Clearly Violated) to 5 (Clearly Applied).

Initially — G2 — Make clear how well the system can do what it can

(5/5) Youtube recommends videos or channels for you. Based on the wording of the sentence, one can understand that it is just a recommendation and you may not like it.

During Interaction — G4 — Show contextually relevant information

(3/5) While watching a video, youtube suggests similar videos in the side bar beside it. Although most of these are accurate, youtube sometimes recommends popular unrelated videos.

When wrong — G8 — Support efficient dismissal

(4/5) Most suggested channels have an “X” button to the side, where when you click it, the message “Got it. We’ll tune your recommendations,” pops up.

Over time — G13 — Learn from user behaviour

(5/5) Youtube’s top recommended videos are constantly changing each time you use the site, based on what you have watched since.

I will now look at other interfaces that have either succeeded or failed to satisfy the most interesting (in my opinion) guidelines in each stage.

Initially — G1 — Make clear what the systems can do

(1/5) Facebook puts in an extensive amount of work in catering relevant ads to their users, however, they don’t make this clear, resulting in many users being unaware of this.

During Interaction — G3 — Time services based on context

(5/5) The uber app constantly updates the drivers location and sends important notifications to the rider accordingly.

When wrong — G11- Make clear why systems did what it did

(5/5) Google maps often indicates the reasons for suggested routes based on factors like speed and traffic.

Over time — G15 — Encourage granular feedback

(5/5) Spotify utilises like and dislikes buttons next to recommended songs, allowing feedback from the user to be straightforward and convenient.
