A poem on grief

My plans aren’t your plans, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my plans than your plans (Isaiah 55 CEB).

When you were just a newborn, I planned to

Load you in my back carrier and hike through the wild woods.

Plunk you in the baby bike seat and ride the rail trails.

Slather you with sunscreen and sift through the beach sand.

Blow raspberries, bubbles, and dandelion fluff.

Sing and dance.

Cuddle.

But

My plans are not God’s plans.

How having less time can make you more productive

The college I work at gave us a bonus of time off over the Christmas holidays. This meant hours of time to catch up on all the writing that I wanted to do!

Wow, it’d been so long since I had such a prolonged stretch of open time to do what I always wanted to do.

Did I get caught up in my writing?

Nope.

Instead, I backed up my computer, shredded old files, tidied my office, went for walks, took naps, washed the dishes, visited friends, watched movies…basically anything BUT write.

It seemed that with all the extra time…

The amazing feeling of once being lost but then being found

My kids were aged three and five. It was a beautiful summer day and they were playing together on the backyard swing set.

I sat on the back deck, reading a book while keeping an eye on them. I went inside to get us all a drink and when I returned they weren’t in the backyard.

No worries. I walked through the house to the front door, expecting to see them in the front yard.

They weren’t in the front yard.

I stepped out of the front door and walked over the driveway to the right side of the house.

Grief

The question that always stops my conversation short

Like most grandmother’s I am immensely proud of my granddaughter.

At 4 years old, she impresses me with her language skills, her logical thinking, and her sense of humour.

She is the apple of my eye.

I call her my “grandbug” and even wrote a book to share with her. You can read the process I went through to create this keepsake for my grandchild here:

She is a pure delight and I talk about her with anyone who will listen.

But when I share my love for this little one, inevitably I get the question, “Do you have any…
