8–5 in the building and taking work home is a “typical” day. Floor session days require staying at the Capitol until they’re done, which can and has gone until 5am. (Our state record is at 66 hours straight from the 2013–2014 session). It also includes working almost every federal holiday that you’re “supposed” to have off, but your boss has parades/district events/breakfasts etc that need to be staffed. So yeah, odd hours.
