My Immigrant Mother’s Difficult Job Search
Megan Reynolds

My mother’s story is similar, except replace “immigrant” with “deaf”. She was laid off of her job of 19 years and it’s almost impossible to find a job that she can do without accommodation. While it is supposed to be illegal to use someone’s disability against them, she never gets past the interview stage. She has amazing drive and work ethic, but no one can get past “needs hearing aid and for people to look directly at her while speaking.”
