Biphobia: When your community doesn’t want you

Thank you for sharing your story, Margot.

I’ve written a couple of posts about my bisexuality (“Does Visibility Matter?” & “The Umbrella Of Queerness: Why Inclusivity Is Necessary, But Insufficient”), and I completely agree that bi-erasure within the LGBTQ+ community is especially painful. The one place we should feel loved, accepted, and validated often demands we prove (somehow) that we belong. It’s as if they’re choosing to be willfully blind to the fact that the gender and sexual orientation of my current partner don’t negate my bisexuality.

Don’t lose hope. I am standing right alongside you (along with so many other bi-s) declaring, “We’re here! We’re queer! Get used to it!”
