Interestingly, this resonated with me regarding my many years in online fanfiction communities. While the communities/forums themselves were “public” most of us did and many still do use pseudonyms to hide our legal, RL identities; as such those communities often tend to be places where we not only talk fanfiction and fandom but about marriages, sexuality, children, jobs, etc. It was (is) a safe space, a “secret” space, because of that anonymity. I feel like a lot of my fandom sisters know me much better than people I see f2f every day.
