All surnames in western Europe are a touch oppressive since the patriarchal tradition eliminates mothers’ surnames. I think the closest predecessor to this kind of effort (though motivated by a different society’s different oppression of its minorities) is the taking of surnames by Ashkenazi jews in the 19th century. Although required by law to take last names, some were, at least, allowed to choose the name. That’s why some people of Jewish descent have such fun last names as Star, Goldberg, Silver, Diamond, etc. I look forward to some cool Afro-futurist surnames: “Datalord, table for 2” “Monique Beatninja, please pick up the coutresy phone…”
