Looking for a job?

Are you looking for a job?

While scrolling through this job site I came across to this job advertisement: “Brand Marketing Assistant UP and UST Graduate” I perceived they are only looking for a UP or a UST graduate then I thought of going back to the meaning of discrimination.

According to dictionary.com discrimination means :

“ treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit”

Source : http://www.dictionary.com/browse/discrimination

Although, there’s no denying that graduates from those schools are high caliber. But selecting the applicants based on the school where they come from rather at the experience and skills of an applicant is very unreasonable. Although let’s face it, it’s just some of the many forms of discrimination on workplaces there are also people being discriminated because of their sex, gender, religion, age, and race. I’ve heard a story from my aunt about a professor who had been in their school, a prominent catholic school, for a long time then suddenly when she came out as a lesbian she was removed in school. Another story was from the article of Chris Malazarte’s Equal Opportunity Employment where he told about the ironic statement he saw on a company’s website when it comes to their fairness employment, he stated:

“One such kind I found recently says, “Our human resource is our best asset…We believe Integrity and Fairness…” Ironically, their job posting reads, “We are in need of a Front Office Assistant, 21–25 years old, female, single and must have a pleasing personality.”

Discrimination on the workplaces are real and it has a lot of implications . It breaks the chance of an individual who dreams to be successful. It also makes people end up getting a work that doesn’t line with their career and study which contributes to the factors of brain drain in a country.

In the US, the government acts to lessen the discrimination happening on workplaces. It has its own regulating commission, U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, that regulates all the job opportunities and workplaces to avoid employees and job seekers to be discriminated.

Companies like Google, Facebook, Accenture, Buzzfeed who are very successful and have very well-rounded employees where every time you go to their career page to their website they are stating they will not discriminate any individual when it comes to sex, gender, religion, race, and age.

These companies are testaments on the effectivity of anti-discrimination laws on the workplaces in the U.S. which factors to their successes. Because these companies give fair opportunity to people, they are able to see a diverse group of people and hear their ideas.

In the end, a school, age, sex, gender, race, and religion don’t define a job seeker or an employee also it mustn’t use as a deal breaker to every opportunity. As long as a job seeker or employee have the right experience, skills, and the drive to be successful in life, that what matters most.

Do you agree?
