The Importance of Summer at Camp Piperwood

Ann and Jennifer Lodge, Camp Piperwood, Rochester New York

Summer camp is an important part of many lives and especially important for many of the young girls that attend the Girl Scout day camp, Camp Piperwood, in Rochester, New York. It has your typical camp activities like arts and crafts, splash pad, high and low ropes courses but there is more under the surface of this camp that you can’t see from the outside.

What makes this particular camp unique is the grant program it offers to help bring inner city kids to the program for 5 weeks each summer. It gives kids who typically wouldn’t have the chance to attend the opportunity to do so. The grant program also provides free breakfasts, lunches, and snacks to feed those who don’t bring their own food.

With an overnight option each Wednesday, older girls have a chance to prepare dinner, a campfire, and stay overnight in one of the many A Frame tents on the camp property.

High and Low Ropes Course

Girls who sign up for the special Ropes Course program get the additional opportunity to challenge themselves on ropes course elements and unique games that help teach teamwork, leadership, communication, problem solving, and many other skills that are important not only to the ropes course program but to life outside of camp.
