The Western moral compass spins like the pointer on the wheel of fortune

Our views on Israel’s and Russia’s justifications for military action differ, even though the situation is similar. Is this the rule-based order that the West requires others to live by?

Many here and around the world seem to think that Israel has the right to attack Palestine because Hamas killed Israelis.

The Russians see a similar justification in Ukraine. Russians have been killed in the country since 2014, e.g. In the Odessa massacre people were burned alive.

Are your bells ringing?

About 14,000 people were killed in the 2014–2022 conflict between the eastern Ukrainian people’s republics and forces in Kiev before Vladimir Putin decided to intervene properly in late February 2022.

Some might say he showed remarkable restraint. Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is not venturing into the 2030s and trying to negotiate.

In the West, it is understood…and not understood. This time, the United States does not impose sanctions, but supports Israel’s military actions. Has there been a green light for the pulverization of the entire Palestinian region?

Any ringing yet?

The display of this double moralism in all its nakedness will drop the scales from one’s eyes, when it comes to Ukraine. Support for the war evaporates like the Palestinian strip.

And before anyone explains the differences in the conflicts by the fact that Israel operates in its own country, etc., it’s something to debate about. If you want, you can participate in that debate, for example, in the comments of this article.

This writing is not a statement on behalf of any party in this conflict, but on the side of seeking and finding a peaceful solution. Both Israeli and Palestinian perspectives must be considered.

Who are we Westerners to moralize parties for taking sides when our own moral compass in relation to various wars spins like the pointer on a wheel of fortune.
