#Resist
When I was a kid we used to run around in gangs after Christmas seeing who could collect the most of the many discarded Christmas trees left out for garbage pick-up. This was in south Texas and there was an arroyo on one side of the neighborhood and farmland with an irrigation ditch on the other. The land in between these landmarks was fair game for stealing the opposing gang’s trees and the plotting and stealth that went on would rival the excitement found in any spy novel. There was no time frame for this activity so there was not an endpoint where we counted to see who had the most Christmas trees and celebrated or whatever. Time went on, the enthusiasm petered out, and we moved on to some other game. We were young, the purpose was not compelling enough to withstand time, and our January gang membership would morph and evolve with whatever was on our busy February agendas.
There are a number of groups where women have gathered to find solace, support, and a place to try on the roles of defiance we may have never had to see ourselves in before. They have kept us sane and safe and given us the tools and courage to be loud. These groups of women have served a purpose. I believe they still serve a purpose. The purpose we all have in common is to minimize the impact this presidency will have not just on our friends and family, but on people we don’t even know.
I want to encourage everyone to either stay with the group where they feel the strongest and the loudest or find one. Don’t worry about being in the biggest group or the one that has the most power. But do continue to reach out to other organizations to learn from them and provide support where you can. I believe that in these groups where we are strong and loud we will prevail.
Special shout out to Netflix and Hill, where I can be my most loud and profanity laced self. XO
