Great article I really appreciate your refreshing honesty and attempt to get some transparency in the discussion. I generally agree that a percentage deal when the provider is only doing distribution doesn’t make sense. But reflecting on Lucie Watson’s Medium article how-can-i-get-on-spotifys-playlists I was wondering about (no names) a certain U.K. based curated distribution service (maybe linked to a large independent) which whilst it takes 15% on a 30 day rolling contract also actively markets and promotes its artists onto those Spotify and Apple Music playlists. In the example you give, earning $5,000 is a hell of a lot of streams, but isn’t paying a percentage to get that initial momentum and recognition also a strategy?
