What is Technological Singularity?

What’s in it for Us?

According to Ray Kurzweil, technological singularity is the process of humanity transcending biology. In other words, Ray believes one day humans will merge themselves with technology to overcome their flaws and weaknesses. As human beings, one of the greatest strengths that we have is our ability learn and to grow and to create. However, those strengths that we have as people are limited due to aging, sickness, injury, or even death. Through technological singularity, it is a belief that our minds will be forever sharp, our vision forever clear, and our bodies forever young and never dying.

Technological singularity sounds like something straight out of science fiction, but when you think about it we've already witnessed early signs of technological advances used in aiding humankind. For example: amputees using remote controlled wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs, the mute using laptops to vocalize their words, or even Ray’s device that allows the blind to read. We've already come a long way as far as technology is concerned and according to Ray the pace has only increased and will continue to increase. So who’s to say a prosthetic limb now, can’t be a fully functioning mechanic arm or leg twenty years from now?

The very thought of technological singularity sounds too good to be true when you look at the big picture and see what it could possibly do for you. Imagine yourself getting older, your hair turning grayer, your skin starting to wrinkle, your bones becoming frail, and your memory becoming clouded, it hasn't happened but you know if you continue on living it is inevitable. As we are now, we cannot defeat the aging process, or that fact that our bodies and our minds won’t last us forever, but what if we could actually beat death? Ultimately speaking, technology singularity may possibly solve all those problems and even stop the aging process after our bodies have reached full maturity. Also think about our minds, probably are most precious tool on our arsenal, lasting us a life time without any forgotten memory, as if we were living super computers. Technological singularity isn't some life style that Ray is trying to force down our throats, but it is assumed to be the next big step in our evolution, to become more than what are.
