It’s time to Rework on Work Strategy

I am glad to Mr. Jason Fried for writing such practical book on Rework on your working strategy, whether your are doing a job, working on client project or working on your own product, OR starting your own small business.
If you are in need for improvement, get real results and overcome of academic myths in this practical world, this is a right book (Practical Guide) to follow and implement in your day to day work and thought process. Yes, I would rather say it as practical guide then just a book. Any work you are doing needs a dedication, focus, skills, decision power, alteration, consistency and most important confidence and passion throughout the cycle of product development.
The guide gives a real inspiration to run small business and become a “Starters” not an entrepreneur. As Entrepreneurship is a heavy word for any startups and most of the people thinks that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. So he has focused on providing tips on executing a BIG idea with baby STEPS.
Some of my learning out of the Guide is
- Manage your time effectively — Stop complaining about it, that you don’t have time, every one can take a valuable time out of their day to day activity without affecting a daily routine. Avoid interruptions, unneeded meetings, Plan to work on your improvement for at-least 1 hours a day, and keep it consistent.
- Do smart work NOT hard work — Doing hard work round the clock doesn’t guarantee you the success you desire. consistency doesn’t come with working round the clock. Target based small task and time management can deliver you desire results.
- We all are BAD estimators or in projections — All business plans, projection of profit, are crap, as we never know what’s going to happen in next few hours. Everything is situational and you need to act accordingly.
- Create Solid Product Base — Follow your basic instinct, do not get drag in including extensive list of features even if it’s requested by customers. Most of the time when you drag into extensive list of features or defocusing your core services, ultimately it’s result into complications for both you as service provider and customer as a end-user. Identifying and solving real problems will help your product to get succeed. Good enough is fine to go ahead do not wait for perfect solutions, because there no such terminology exists like perfect solution.
- Entrepreneur is big word, be A STARTER Instead — Entrepreneurship is not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s a huge responsibility, and cary lot of baggage with it. when starter is just initiator and you will get time to mature during the process. This mindset can help you with remove extra baggage and focus on your core activities.
- How to keep 100% control on a startup — Getting early seed investment from investors can be a big help, but along with it, it will also attract the difference of opinion, and burden of fulfil investors interest, in early time. Do not look for early investment, if you can help your product to grow by yourself there is nothing better than it. In this digital world most of the time you do not require much investment and still you can spread the word through different online mediums and solving end user real problems.
- How to counter competition — Getting caught in competitors strategy is very easy and likely to be, Rather think about users and real solution only, and focus on your vision. Because following competition can end-up dragging your efforts in the wrong direction sometimes. It’s not at all needed that if your competitors ads up additional feature you should add that as well, Believe in your product, vision and solution you aim to provide to solve customers problems.
- Hiring — Do it yourself first, do not delegate the things in start, if you can stretch and work it on your own it’s the best thing to done, and then hire the right talent based on right interview process and assigning things on test drive. Look out for great talent everywhere, do not limit yourself local as talent is everywhere, establish frequent communication system and meet-ups once in awhile if working remotely.
- Culture — You can not create the culture, it’s happens. It’s by product of consistent behaviour. If you share, the sharing will become your culture, if you motivate gossip.
At the end the conclusion is you gotta believe in your idea, follow and get inspired every time, set tiny goals, work smart, hire good people not great people, marketing is everything it’s not just a department, there are many more concepts have been disclosed in a book and it’s worth to read it on your own.
