Here’s a related article (by me) wondering about the fate of mathematics teaching in the pre-college space. Here’s a required subject or “track” suffering from its own PR problems as in “when will I ever need this?” and yet if a math teacher tries (boldly) to innovate around coding (a logical step), the push back is “no, that’s computer science”.

So instead of offering professional development and innovative curricula to math teachers, we use the dearth of computer science teachers as an excuse to go into hand-wringing mode. That’s akin to saying we can’t teach “data science” because all we have are statisticians in the room.

Is programming a computer to make an icosahedron spin around its many axes not mathematical? How about RSA crypto? Why not infuse mathematics with CS rather than insist these remain separate STEM subjects? Just asking.
