Arif Erdem Ocak at Kiremico Sessions Budapest

Open mic night out, once again.

I have an automatic refusing behavior to go there most of the time, and there are specific reasons why I do it.
Starting from the musicians who play covers, the long waiting lists, and the ‘after open-mic’ gatherings that last forever.

Musicians seem to live life at night and I never understood how do they wake up the day after, or if they even have a plan for a tomorrow.

I never remember the name of the Open mics I go too, and this one will be no exception, but it brought a superb musician to us, Arif Erdem Ocak.

When we first listened to Arif material- on a Sunday afternoon — recording on YouTube, he didn’t properly call our attention. I think that we listened to a few songs, then we passed on to the next musician who filled the Kiremico form.

A day later after that event, we were hanging around with musicians late night, when one of them grabbed our guitar and started playing a super catchy middle eastern tune with our friend Mélys.

We decided implicitly that he was the one who should be recorded in Budapest and we took his contact. Funny fact is the one that the musician we like is the one we were not sure we liked a day before
which demonstrate the level of subjectivity in decision making, but also the surprising power of the live venue. We all liked the energy of the song when recorded live but we were not in the mood for YouTube.

The story gets even better when below a recalcitrant sun, Arif describes his previous super successful band in Turkey. Jeremy laughed for a moment, incredulous of who’s his actually recording now.

I never talked to Jeremy about what he had in mind at that time, but I’m sure we would have been a bit more accurate with the time we showed up to the recording meeting.

To make it up, Jeremy put a pretty good amount of creativity to make that video. Not only about the shoots, but I can say it is one of his best editings, and doubtless, a great storyboard for Arif’s look.
