This blog talks describes nothing about the band, but about all our trip to Serbia. Yes.

Almost 4 weeks after the trip has started and we are crossing Serbia. What used to be ex-Yugoslavia and all that that involves after it collapsed was in front of us.

The guy who drove the bus — and behaved super nice on the Hungarian — turns out to be a total disgust as soon as we crossed the Serbian border and the police lady comes in.

“Sit down correctly! Don’t you see there is a police officer in front of you?” Shouts at me. This is the welcoming way.

I had low expectations from Serbia, and we popped in there just cause a few friends we met in China were currently in the country. Otherwise, we would, to be honest, have skipped it completely.

We reached there with absolute no musician signed up in our form and a bit tired of the previous hectic behavior of the trip.

Our first stop was Novi Sad. Chilled place, looked like a 4th tier Argentinian city, where couples in their mid-20s walk hand in hand the main square, like hiding the boredom.

Luka saved the Novi Sad Trip inviting friends some biologist friends and taking us to his place in the middle of a countryside nowhere where his mom prepared a superb banquet.

Late night on Sunday, we take a BlaBlaCAr in the direction to Belgrade. Still uncertain about the city look and vibe, but rather unoptimistic about it… What a surprise.
Beautiful buildings pop on the car window, dropping city lights on eyes and amazing architecture. It’s the Serbian capital, and it’s beautiful.

The morning after comes, the fresh air of a Monday, sunny terraces with nice looking people taking coffees in cafés. All feels like summertime. Everyone feels like on vacations. And here we are, with no sign-up band.

The whole thing resolves smoothly as Kevin searches on Sofar Sounds bands. He finds an interesting indie one, named ‘Paper Animals’. They sound good, they look good and the energy is contagious.
Drops a message, and they say yes to everything. The date, the instruments, the location, bringing friends, everything. Some people make it easy.

The location is a tiny alley with Graffitis around the Skadarljia area and the acoustics turned out to be great. The Paper Animals, as the first band on the whole trip that brought their own audience, truly rocked the spot.
There is something really cool about these kids. The lyrics, the voice of Sofija and the cool arrangements that the band does around a sound that is fresh and sophisticated.

To be continued in Belgrade, but for now, better to ask yourself whether you want to be a hedgehog or a fox.
