What the 2016 Olympics taught us
Phelps wasn’t born in the water. Biles wasn’t born in the gymnastics gym. Phelps was fearful of putting his face in the water until 1996 when he was 11 years old. Biles didn’t do gymnastics until she went on a field trip. Phelps was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. Biles taken plenty of falls over her career.
“Energy and persistence conquer all things” -Benjamin Franklin
Setting out to achieve goals isn’t as it is protrayed in the movies. There is no Eye of the Tiger playing in the background, instead you hear the sobs of failure. There are no montages of you working hard, instead flashes of misery. There is no sweet smell of victory, instead the stench of quiting. There is no Will Smith pep talk scene, instead the taunts of those around you. “Energy and persistence conquer all things”. The Rio Olympics have showed us this thus far. With Phelps winning his 22nd gold medal Friday night he showed us how “Energy and Persistence conquer all things”. With Biles being the 2016 Olympic individual all-around champion she showed how “Energy and Persistence conquer all things”. I won’t be going to the Olympics anytime soon but that doesn’t mean I can’t learn from the great. “Energy and Persistence conquer all things”. Day in and day out when others sleep, you grind. When others rest, you race. Energy. When the agony of failure makes you sob, you get up and go again. When your head hurts from dwelling the wrong, you zone in and find solutions. Persistence. You preform the actions and let the fruits fall in on their own. You grit your teeth and rough it out and let the success flow in. Conquer. With newfound success you will forget the sleepless nights. With new found fame you will leave the pain behind. You will have what you want. All. “Energy and Persistence conquer all things” Ben Franklin isn’t here to witness the 2016 Olympics but if he was we all know what he would say.
