Am I correct in assuming that you’re currently hosted by wordpress.com? We currently have a ticket open with them to see if they can support the oembed without the plugin — hopefully they will get back to us soon!

The plug-in is slightly better than a linked image, because it is fully interactive and shoppable, but in the meantime your workaround looks great!
