The idea that we can force folks to be something they don’t want to be is problematic to me because, with our current methods, it clearly doesn’t work consistently enough. This is not to say that I don’t believe in changing minds; I do. I don’t believe that it’s our only goal, or even our biggest one. I also don’t think the majority of us know what the fuck we’re doing when it comes to changing the mind of a nazi.
Most of the activists I follow aren’t out there trying to coddle nazis; they’re out there demanding that policymakers who claim they aren’t nazis hear them and stand with them. These activists focus their time and energy educating folks who are ready to hear them and pushing us to a place where we can demand changes that will be more than booby prizes. Where we are strong enough to risk ourselves to make it clear what we will not tolerate. Where we can be louder, and relentless. (I’m not sure why we’re on this now tho; what happened to googlebro?)
