Kitty Kad Marketplace Update 20 June
Wen marketplace? — the age old question
A quick update on the upcoming Kitty Kad Marketplace. The post will be in three parts as always
- Background and history
- Wen Marmalade and Marketplace?
- Why no custom marketplace?
Background and history
The Gen 0 sale finished on the 7th of May. 10,000 kitties found a nice home. However, a lot more people wanted to buy kitties and others were looking to sell their kitties (either for a profit or to others looking to breed them).
However, one thing was unclear at the time — Wen Marmalade? This answer would impact whether Kitty Kads has their own marketplace or if it builds on the Marmalade standard.
Wen Marmalade and Marketplace?
After asking the Kadena team, it turns out that Marmalade has been confirmed and is live!
There are no live projects that fully implemented Marmalade, so there’s a bit of work to figure out how to implement it best.
Over the coming weeks I will be working with other projects on Kadena to understand the standard better. Hopefully we’ll all be able to share our learnings as a result.
Eventually I hope for Kitty Kads to be trade-able on marketplaces like the Babena or Hype marketplaces. However this will depend on how things are implemented.
Why no custom marketplace?
This involves a story, but tldr is that using Marmalade will benefit the community as a whole more.
After Kitty Kad Gen 0s sold out, I published a few tutorials on basics of NFTs and I helped a few contracts understand my code.
Since then — another project has gone live which is inspired by implementation of NFTs and multiple others have been using the contract to better understand how NFTs and Pact work.
The kitties didn’t follow the Marmalade standard, but it should be fairly easy to migrate as the code was intentionally kept simple
However, seeing the influence that it made, I realized a few projects will look towards how kitties implement buying / selling to learn from it.
What this also means, is that if kitties don’t implement Marmalade, then there’s a possibility that other early projects go for a non-Marmalade implementation.
This could lead to the ecosystem having short term division, instead of a unified system. Since migrating a marketplace is harder than migrating / upgrading basic NFT functionality, I thought its better to spend time going deep into Marmalade.
As a result, I hope to share my findings (unless other projects share their findings first 😉 ) and help other projects grow.
That’s it for now! Hopefully as time goes on, you’ll see my paws covered in Marmalade more and more
