I remember talking to a young Frenchman in Washington around 1978 and offering the view that the USA was in decline. He had lived there for some years and replied: ‘Never write off the US’. He was fully aware (as I later accepted) that this was a country that is also a continent — a vast milieu with many facets decorated with shared superficial veneers — a universe in its own right masquerading as an ‘ordinary’ country. Although I am appalled by the ongoing internal attacks on its institutions, its history has been extraordinary and its future is still hopeful.
