Very interesting what you bring up here, we really are approaching exciting times.

I do however think that screens aren’t necessarily as misplaced as you make them out to be, or visuals in general. The fact remains that vision is our most advanced sense and it uses the most amount of energy in the brain to see. Because of this it simply makes sense to provide visual feedback rather than strictly audio or haptic feedback (or even smell). That said, putting an iPad-esque screen in everything new with touch as the only real input (and only on the screen) will be missing the point of future tech.

This will simply be the next big challenge for designers to solve. Design is, after all, not about prettifying things, but solving problems in an efficient and intuitive manner.
