Castle Crashers: Its Creation

Castle Crashers, is a 2d side-scrolling, “hack and slash” game. Released by the Behemoth in 2008, it was the first “modern game” I had ever played. Compared to Pac-Man, Dig Dug, and Gemini, this game crushed my old view of video games as a six-year old and introduced me to the modern gaming world.

Playing as one of its numerous fighters you fight your way through progressively harder foes and bosses in an attempt to save a magical crystal from the grips of evil forces.

Available on the Xbox 360, Xbox 1, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, Microsoft, and Mac, the game swept through the gaming community due to the good reputation of The Behemoth. As expected, Castle Crashers did not disappoint.

Due to familiarity and good past experience, the developers used Adobe Flash for all of their “coding goodness”.The game has 31 characters, each with their own individual benefits, only 4 of which are available at the start of the game. It has 5 modes, co-cop, solo, online, catfish, and insane. The campaign has 32 levels and 29 unlock-able pets each with their own unique design, ranging from cute and fuzzy to downright weird and disturbing. The game takes about 5–6 hours to complete. However, after completing the game, there are 12 more characters to unlock, each of which can only be earned, by completing the game again, one time for each character. Once completing those, you can progress to Insane and Catfish mode, and play deadly mini games with other players online. All of this, in addition to the irresistibly epic looking DLC, countless enemies, and bosses, took 3.5 years to make and with a 45,000 dollar budget.

Castle Crashers, although being an “old” indie game, maintains a small measure of it’s popularity. The characters are in Minecraft as wearable skins, and the four starter characters can be found in all of The Behemoths games released after Castle Crashers.
