How to Grow a Mind Garden

And why we must choose our plants carefully.

I have a secret.

Often, I wake startled with unfiltered thoughts colliding. “I’m tired.” “Today is going to be tough.” “What time do I have to get up?” “Do I have to workout this morning?”

It’s been this way since the depth and intensity of the hurricane recovery process became reality. It’s like my brain seizes the opportunity to rebel. And for a while, I really struggled. Mornings were downright painful.

Eventually, I came to think of my mind as a garden — realizing that I could nurture the thoughts I wanted to grow, and prune the ones that I didn’t. The weeds might dominate for the first few minutes, but that’s all they’d get.

Here’s how to grow your own Mind Garden:

1 — Plant the seeds of new beliefs and mindsets.

Write the desired thought on a notecard. I recommend focusing on 1 to 3 new ideas at a time. When you can, think of a specific way to apply the principle that day.
