Why has Nvidia been in the news lately?
Over the past year things have not been going smoothly for the graphics card maker Nvidia. A decrease from the previously high demand for its GPUs during the Covid19 pandemic, lower interest in cryptocurrency mining since the steep decline in prices of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and increased competition on the GPU front from AMD and Intel have hit Nvidia hard. Developments over the past few months however may signal a positive change in Nvidia’s fortunes.
Despite a cooling in the demand for GPUs and cryptocurrency mining solutions, Nvidia has seen increased visibility since its high-profile entry into the rapidly-expanding field of artificial intelligence.
This has contributed to a massive rise in Nvidia’s valuation, which has seen the company’s price per share increase to over 400 dollars and its total valuation increase to over 1 trillion dollars.
The most noteworthy technology that Nvidia has been involved with as of late is generative AI. Generative AI is a field of artificial intelligence that involves giving the AI engine data to learn patterns from in order to create different types of data such as video, text, images and 3D models.
Nvidia’s flagship generative AI product, the Grace Hopper Superchip, when put into the DGX GH200 supercomputer, is capable of a collective performance of over 1 exaflops.
At a recent conference, Nvidia showcased its product’s ability to generate 3D characters realistically speaking and singing in full sentences from only a paragraph of text.
This development, amongst others, could dramatically change the way people do graphics-heavy activities such as video conferencing and video game development.
We seem to be entering another stage of rapid technological development, perhaps akin to the emergence of previous trendsetting technologies such as the personal computer, the Internet and the smartphone.
