I Almost Fell For a Facebook Marketplace Scam — 6 Digit Verification Code

This is how the scam works.
When you put an item for sale on Facebook Marketplace, the scammer will contact you with something that goes:
“Im interested but please text me at this number [insert number here]” because I rarely login to facebook.”
Once you text them, they will ask some questions about the product, which at first make them look legit.
This is where the scam starts — they will say they want to protect themselves, so they will send you a 6-digit verification number.
Then, they ask you send it back to verify that you’re real to them.
Once you send the 6-digit code back, you’re screwed because they will use that number to open a google voice account. Here is the source for this information.
In my case, they couldn’t send me a code because I was using a Google Voice number to begin with.
So, a few things you can do to protect yourself:
- Don’t send anyone a code that you did not generate (login passcode for example)
- Report the person’s profile on Facebook.
- Report the number (if they text you back) as a scam.
- Block the profile of the scammer.
