If you watch Fox News, then you’ve seen Obama get blamed for a lot of things. But no one ever blames him for Trump. I don’t blame him for Trump either, but as I’ve been watching live videos of Trump’s rallies and I can’t help but wonder if Trump is running as a rebuttal to Obama’s roast during the 2012 White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Everything we’ve witnessed since Trump announced his candidacy might be an elaborate, long-winded, roundabout way of saying, “Oh yeah? I’ll show you.”
Ridicule is a weapon. The word ‘violence’ should be reserved for physical attacks. Ridicule is not violence, but it is a weapon and it can be effective one at that. At the Correspondents’ Dinner, Obama used that weapon effectively. Trump isn’t running on principle or policy. He’s running on his ego. That’s not my opinion, that’s the opinion of many prominent Republicans. Is really so far-fetched to believe he’s actually running on a bruised one?
This might seem like it’s coming out of left field, but I’m going to make a bold claim which I plan to explore in subsequent posts: I think the rise of the Trump candidacy is not unrelated to how we address mental health in our country.
