How to calculate Resistor Value?

A resistor color coding scheme has been devised to help identify the numerous types of resistors available. The genuine resistor must have some form of resistance value in order to control the flow of current and cause a voltage drop in a variety of ways. IEC 60062 defines the global standard for resistor color labeling. The Resistor Colour Code approach is excellent, but in order to obtain the correct resistor value, we must understand how to use it. When reading color-coded bands from left to right, the band closest to a connecting lead is called the “left-hand” or most important colored band. Resistor color coding employs coloured bands to quickly identify a resistor’s resistive value and percentage tolerance.

Band Scheme for Resistors

A carbon-composition resistor can have 4–6 bands. A 5-band resistor is more precise than a 4-band resistor due to the addition of a third significant number. A temperature coefficient band is added to a 6-band resistor, which is comparable to the 5-band resistor discussed before (the 6th band).
