Why should you be teaching?

For the money. Definitely for the money.

I don’t think any teacher teaches for the pay. They do it because there is something inside of them, that they were either born with, or learned throughout the years, that draws them to helping students learn. People should teach because they want to change kids’ lives. That is the grand idea of teaching, but they should also want to teach to help students’ reach their full potential as people. So many kids don’t have a cheer squad in their corner and teachers can become that for them. All it takes is one teacher to believe in you to change everything. I will never forget that one teacher that shook me up and forced me to come outside of my comfort zone. He was my high school band teacher and I will never be able to forget him. I know that I should be teaching to become more like Mr. Scavone. He challenged kids and made them squirm, only because he knew they could be better than they ever imagined. Mr. Scavone takes his students outside of the classroom any chance he has to play and explore music in the community and in far away places. I think this should be happening in every classroom in the nation. But the world isn’t that perfect. The country isn’t abundant with Mr. Scavone’s. I know that teaching needs to be challenged, just like students need to be. If someone asks me why I should be teaching, I will answer with “because I need to.”
