“Those of us who shout the loudest about Americanism in making character assassinations are all too frequently those who, by our own words and acts, ignore some of the basic principles of Americanism:
The right to criticize;
The right to hold unpopular beliefs;
The right to protest;
The right of independent thought.”
This is a quote from Senator Margaret Chase Smith in 1950 (wait- weren’t those supposed to be the “Good Ol’ Days?”). Her “Declaration of Conscience” could/SHOULD be read today on the Senate floor. She was the first to confront Joseph McCarthy and his fearmonger team which has too many similarities to the current Trump campaign.
She was also the first woman to run for president in 1964.
We must learn from history and not repeat it!
