[How to manipulate masses and create your own cult in 8 easy steps]
Thanks to Gym Woiciechowski who suggested this article so you can expose the snake-oil merchants of hope yourself…
(…or create your own cult, if you feel like it).
1- Look for common frustrations.
The easiest way is to pick needs and write them down as conspiracies:
Need for sex -> “Today’s society doesn’t value people like you”.
Earn more money -> “Power players keep your potential trampled.”
2- Identify yourself as the messiah
With a vague and scattered language, claim that you are coming to save your followers from that conspiracy.
Come up with the causes of that frustration they feel.
Above all, use charisma. Speak seriously with a calm tone, like you’re in control.
3- Create rituals and slogans
The rituals, colors and mottos of your cult will help you keep your fans together as a group.
Let them dress with your colors and repeat the mantras.
Tip: Make your speeches fancy, but keep slogans simple.
4- The ‘donations’ will allow your movement to grow and expand.
Demand contributions from the beginning; the simplest of all is evangelization of new fans.
As your sect evolves, consider asking for money or favors of all kinds.
5- Find an enemy to fight.
It doesn’t matter if it’s Lucifer 2.0, the bourgeoisie or Artificial Intelligence, as long as you can blame it.
Channel the frustration of your fans towards it and announce an epic confrontation.
6- Make sure that ‘epic confrontation’ never comes.
You must keep your followers in suspense, fighting ‘battle after battle’.
Combine apparent victories with inspiring defeats; affirm that the next time will be different.
That way you, can keep your followers on the edge for years.
7- Reward the most faithful followers and punish those who doubt your vision.
It’s crucial that you foster a hierarchy around you; Only the most dedicated can have the privilege of approaching your space.
Remember: you are a mythical, unique being.
Finally, the most important thing:
8- Isolate your fans
It’s critical that your followers feel a strong rejection to anyone who doesn’t believe in you.
Specifically (and specially) family and friends.
Your success lies in your fans being emotionally dependent on you and despise the ‘non-believers’.
Congratulations! You’re the owner of your very own, brand new Cult.
- Identify frustrations and express them as conspiracies
- Create rituals and slogans
- Look for a common enemy
- Isolate your followers from non-believers.
