An open letter to my son on his birthday

On April 4, 2013 you were born into the world making today your golden birthday. I’m writing this short letter now so that you will appreciate the insight sometime in the future.

You already demonstrate strong-willed confidence and optimism in everything you do. You are also part of a great family legacy. It just so happens that you share a birthday with your Great Grandfather. He was with us until late last year when he went to be with his Savior. He had a great personality — he loved life, made education of others a priority, served, and instilled many enduring values into the lives of his children and grandchildren.

Your Grandfather is also an exceptional individual. He has made education his life, impacting so many lives for the better. He is always finding creative ways to make learning exciting, especially in the most unlikely places. Just like his father before him he put an emphasis on a strong family rooted in the values of his faith.

My hope for you on your birthday is that you continue to be the fun-loving kid who sets his own rules. You have a lot to learn and even more to discover. I hope to be able to show you the full depth of the legacy left to you by your grandparents and great-grandparents. I am confident that lives will be impacted for the better because of your personality. I can’t wait to see who you will become and I hope to be able to be there through it all. Happy Birthday little man!
