It’s not her by herself. It’s her machine.
This goes back to the 2000 NY Senate campaign. New York has lots of ambitious and eminently qualified Democrats, but when Pat Moynihan decided he was retiring, instead of a vigorous Democratic primary and a proper debate of what it means to represent the state in the Senate, the state’s Democrats got the word coming down from on high that all ways were to be made smooth for Hillary and that none should challenge her if they knew what was good for them.
Not everybody was willing to roll over for that, and that subset of Democrats has only grown over the past 17 years.
