Listen: I’m really interested in living alongside some of this in my upcoming unit on Civil Rights with my 8th grade U.S. History class. I’m in my first year of teaching this class, and… it’s a first year experience, for sure. Anyhow, my essential questions for the coming semester (civil war, Great Depression, world war 1/2 — more of the second — and civil rights movement) are, “What’s the story behind my story?” and “What does it mean to be independent and free in America?”
You [bowing in gratitude] are calling me to take the next step within these questions, I think — both in content AND in method.
