In 25 years on this internet I can not remember a single time thinking “wow, thanks for that ad!”.

To users they are _nothing_ but annoying, yet they continue being rammed down our throats because the oh so innovative internet companies are clueless (see what I did there? ;) ) about how to make users pay for content any other way.
