Sketchnotes and graphic recording

So you are organizing an event, lecture, debate, or conference. You are looking for an attractive way to engage with your audience during the event, and to share the key messages with the world through social media. After the event, you want to have a concise, visually attractive summary.

Look no further, we are here to help.

What is sketchnoting?

Sketchnotes are a live graphical summary of what’s happening. Remember those boring, old school notes you used to take during lectures at school — ending up in your drawer never to be looked at again? Sketchnotes are nothing like that!

Sketchnoters use paper, a variety of pens and tools, and all their creative juices to turn your event into cool-looking drawings. They watch and listen to what’s happening, outline the structure of a presentation, process the information to highlight key messages and interesting quotes, and turn them into clear and attractive little drawings.

By combining text with images, sketchnotes stimulate our brain and improve our memory. They are better suited to show structure, and are more fun to read than regular notes, boosting engagement with your audience both during and after the event.

Sketchnoting can be done on paper (typically A4 or A3 size)or digitally (e.g. on an iPad), but most people prefer the tangible results of a version on paper. Below are some examples — on the left, a summary of a scientific debate on elderly care, on the right an event on omnichannel retail and distribution including different smaller presentations by researchers and business people.

What is graphic recording

Graphic recording is the bigger brother of sketchnoting. Now we’re talking about size, baby: typically at least 1 meter in height, and at least 1,5 meters wide. But we can go much wider — with the right set-up, a graphical ‘wall’ of several meters is perfectly possible. Bigger boards, bigger tools, bigger illustrations — that also means more impact, and more engagement with your audience! While sketchnoting is often limited a single lecture or presentation, graphic recording is more flexible. We can capture anything from about one hour up to a daylong event or a multi-day conference.

How does sketchnoting or graphic recording with Baryon work?

At Baryon, we care about your peace of mind, especially on a stressful event day. We prefer to have a personal meeting to discuss your needs and desires for this particular project. Depending on your type of event, the location, your target audience, budget, and the desired end result we will evaluate the different possibilities (digital or on paper, small or large size) and make a decision, together with you.

At the day of the event, we will be there well in time. We’ll bring all the necessary materials and set them up according to your wishes. During the event we’ll capture your key messages into the perfect visual summary. Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to take pictures of the work in progress. At the end of the day, we’ll clean up and hand you over the final result — or we can send it to you later. If you want we can also send you the digital version afterwards, ready to share on social media or in a newsletter.

How much does it cost?

Ah, the crucial question! The answer is, unfortunately, ‘it depends’. First of all, it depends on the duration of your event: a one-hour lecture requires less time than a full-day workshop or a multi-day conference. Furthermore, graphic recording is somewhat more expensive than sketchnoting, because more and bigger material is required. Finally, the location of your event will have an impact — if we have to travel for a long time this might increase the price.

But don’t worry. We value clear and transparent communication, so we will explain and agree on our price during our initial discussion before the event, and you can rest assured that we’ll stick to it.
