You are constantly waiting for something, in the supermarket at the cash, in the underground, the traffic jam, the bank and you are also waiting for your friend to come, but you just don’t mind it. You are waiting for your operating system to be updated, apps being installed. Just like anyone else you wouldn’t like to depend on time either. But you still need to wait until it comes true. For how long? What does the length of waiting time depend on? Can you influence it? Hereby I am looking for answers to these questions.

I am not going to try to define the concept of time since some wise ones have done that before in different forms. The descriptions about it I like best are borrowed from…

As it was promised, God let the people into the land of Canaan. It finally happened. Funny but it happened by a virus. My friends working in e-commerce steadily say that a new and massive group appeared on customer services who need information about the basics, asking questions like: how does the cart function? how can I pay by credit card online? Last brunches of people are crossing the Jordan at this very moment. The digital age is stepping into its matured stage right now.

This digital world carries an important feature in it that is systematically eliminating our beliefs that have been hardwired into our minds for centuries, namely accept what they say, take it as it comes. It can be detected in several areas, just think of teaching. ”Digital” teaching. Many teachers want their students to accept the solutions they provide for them. But the students don’t understand them. …

Specification, let’s diversify and multiply. Specialization is an inevitable and also necessary process characterized by a giant troop of nerds who are not able to create on their own, what’s more they are not willing to change and do something new.

Let me give you an example from our ecosystem that can be best concluded with the following tweet:

Whenever I am asked: ”Who did the user research? Who designed the information architecture? Who did the wireframe? Who was that…?” and then I answer to each question: ”It was me”.

That’s what we call design, we the old stagers.

There is a project, the team gets excited, everyone is happy and satisfied. Let’s do it, it will be fun. Then some difficulties appear, things don’t happen in a way we expected. Things are getting messy, though everyone is working hard, the end is hardly seen. The ”it will never be ready” feeling is poisoning the team. It is getting darker, no light is seen in the distance.

Have you felt this before? Rosabeth Moss Kanter of Harvard Business School details this phenomena in her Kanter’s law:

Everything Looks like a Failure in the Middle

What can you do against it?

Progressbar

You are walking and spot a fruit tree in the distance. Your brain produces dopamine to set off. As you are approaching you can see how many steps you still have to take and your brain is dosing more and more dopamine. When you finally reach your destination you get a dopamine rush. That’s the way you function. So you should separate the project procedure with milestones and continuously track them as my teammates did in fps ecosystem…

Those who have ever been involved in UX must have heard about Susan Weinschenk, The Brain Lady. Personally Susan is one of my favourite authors, I have read all her published books, I also follow her blog, twitter and YouTube channel. She was so nice and answered my questions. If you do not know her, it is highly recommended to read the words below because you may profit from her thoughts.

Hungarian version of this interview is also available.

In your view how important is psychological, social psychological knowledge for those who are working in the UX field?

I think psychology is critical to work in the UX field, but of course I would say that because I have a Ph.D. in psychology, so I look at everything from a psychology point of view! If you are designing a product and people are going to use it, then I think you need to know a) about people in general, how they think, see, decide, what motivates them to take action, etc., and then b) about the psychology of the particular people who will be using your product and the particular context that interacts with their psychology. …

You bump into a mistake, a typo and you immediately take a screenshot, a photo and post it on social media, right? Oooh, what trash is this?, what a loser, can you see? Baaa, how stupid they are, hahahhahhaa…

You’re awesome! You spotted it and told to everyone, got a lot of likes, they are laughing with you. But wait! It reminds me of a scene from South Park. When one of the guy says something stupid and Mr. Garrison tells the others:

”Come on, let’s surround him, show at him and laugh out loud!”

Twitter and Facebook contains plenty of examples of that behaviour, especially the groups on Facebook. But what is it all about? Mostly it’s a tool of self-flattering or just laughing with others at others. I suppose they don’t come to think of it. …

I wanted to write this post for a while now, because I know from personal experience how hazardous and harmful sedentary work can be to an individual’s health. I asked Judit Tóth for professional help: she is a personal trainer with a professional degree (IWI ELITE Trainer), as well as a mental hygiene health developer and the owner of the personal training and health studio ‘Total Fitt’.

Why to write about this?

The office I work in is mostly full of young men, who tend to ignore every time I urge them to do some exercise. After all they’re young, and none of them have pains, so why bother? Typical human behaviour — everything’s fine as long as it doesn’t hurt, but when it does, people run from one doctor to another. Generally speaking, doctors only offer symptomatic treatment (although there are some exceptions), which involves prescribing medicine and recommending that you should go swimming, which in 99% of cases you will not do. Soon you will start taking painkillers, muscle relaxants, magnesia pills to ease the pain for a short amount of time. However, your lifestyle remains unchanged, sitting in front of the computer and not moving at all. Painkillers will be useless after a while and serious spine deformation or spinal hernia develops, which will require operation. …
