EOS vs Ethereum — Who will win the DApp platform war?
I have spent this week in Riga, Latvia, speaking to several projects and companies about blockchain and crypto. There is a lot of enthusiasm for both the Ethereum and EOS platform.
During a conversation with the Cryptocurrency Investment Analyst at Tripterium, Anna Borisova, the topic moved to the rivalry between Ethereum and EOS.
Essentially, Ethereum and EOS are the top two decentralized application (DApp) platforms by market-cap. There are other major players such as NEO, Stellar, Tron and Cardano who are not far behind.
We both agreed that the smart contract platform wars will be very similar to the operating system (OS) wars in the early days of the Internet. Windows and Mac won that lucrative prize.
Ethereum was proposed in late 2013 by Vitalik Buterin, a cryptocurrency researcher and programmer. The official announcement took place on January 23, 2014, and the ICO was held in the summer, concluding on September 2, 2014, having raised $18.3 million. Ethereum launched on July 30, 2015, so has a big head start on EOS.
The EOS platform was announced at Consensus 2017. The project raised over $4 billion during an ICO that lasted, from June 2017 to June 2018. EOS launched on the main net on June 1, 2018.
Ethereum and EOS are both blockchain platforms that at the core, are decentralized platforms that run smart contracts. From a technical and practical perspective, they are so different.
Ethereum has transaction fees and is having trouble scaling. Though, the community is working on solving the scaling issues.
EOS has no transaction fees, but there are issues around its constitution, which the community is working to resolve.
It is very early to know who the winner will be, though Ethereum is in the lead at the moment. Supporters of EOS have dubbed EOS the “Ethereum Killer”.
Competition drives innovation, and competition between the smart contract platforms is great for developers and good for mainstream consumer-grade blockchain adoption. Blockchain technology is breaking old conventions and creating new possibilities for small business owners, entrepreneurs and institutions.
It is with this in mind that Anna Borisova and I, have decided to organise an expo to take place on October 2019, to bring the best EOS and Ethereum DApps together.
We therefore officially invite you to the first DApp Expo titled EOS vs Ethereum — Who will win the DApp platform war?
The Expo will take place in Riga, Latvia. More information will be available soon.
