Pocket Money & Financial Literacy

Believe it or not, allowance is a $300B+ market worldwide according to several studies; “A 2012 survey by the American Institute of CPAs found that the average American child makes around $780 per year from his or her allowance, or $65 per month. However, only 1% of parents said their kids actually save any of their allowance”.

Financial mismanagement and a lack of financial education are widespread all over the world. Even in privileged societies, people of all ages and backgrounds have experienced some lapses in saving or giving money.

GIVE is here to make a change at the root of the issue by influencing better spending and saving behaviors in kids. If kids grow up without some level of financial literacy, they are bound to experience some difficulty with managing finances as they grow older.

Where are schools?

Even schools fail to properly address the issue of financial literacy. K-12 education covers many fundamental ideas that prepare kids for adulthood yet fails to bring money into the equation.

With a lagging school system, many kids do not experience successful money management until they are out of college.

How can this issue be eliminated or reduced?

Who am I?

I am Koosha Azim: a teenage guy who has experienced a lack of financial education first hand. Through my 11 years of traditional public schooling in California, I have only been introduced to productive methods of managing finances in my college Macroeconomics class this year. Personally, I have the privilege to take this course and analyze these disparities.

The reality is that most kids do not have access to financial literacy tools or ways of managing their allowances. GIVE disrupts the current trajectory of traditional schooling by bringing these vital skills to the playing field of children.

I am proud to be a GIVE ambassador and help bring more attention to these issues. Over time, I will continue creating content about GIVE and introduce young generations to money management skills that can help them in the future.
