The most thrilling of all sharks to dive amongst is alleged to be the bull shark. They normally measure between seven to eleven feet in length and weigh between 200–500m pounds. White bull sharks are considered to be one of the most dangerous and aggressive sharks in the ocean, but swimmers, surfers, and beachgoers are far more likely to encounter a bull shark rather than a great white. Their habitat is world-wide, but divers regularly spot bull sharks in the Caribbean waters off Mexico’s Yucatan coast, around Playa del Carmen, especially in the winter months from November to March. Bull shark diving is the extreme scuba diving experience for certified divers as the dive programme will introduce adventure seekers to a close look at these wild sharks. Bull sharks can swim in both salt and freshwater, and are drawn to the Playa by cenotes that pump out into the sea, leaving an abundant food supply of fish and large turtles. Included in the dive are tanks and weights, and a professional multilingual certified scuba diving instructor. You’ll learn all the necessary skills and diving techniques required when diving with the sharks.

A short boat ride will take you to the dive site, and then everyone will descend into the water at once, reaching the bottom to kneel down in the sand. During the entire dive the bull sharks will circle the group, coming very close and looking straight at you as you remain still without swimming around. At the end of the dive you’ll slowly ascend to the surface. With the right diving crew you’ll be perfectly safe in the water without a cage for protection.

Diving with bull sharks isn’t recommended for beginners! You need to be a certified diver with experience so that you know how to stay calm and safe in their presence.

When is the best time to book a bull shark dive?

Between the months of November and March is the best time to make your booking as these are the months when most bull sharks migrate to the area to spend their time before they head north again. The warm, shallow waters attract the sharks as the temperature is just a few degrees cooler than during the summer months. Morning dives are the best for meeting bull sharks within the Playa waters, and dives vary from depths of 25 metres to shallow dives among the corals.
