That is the crux of our problems as a society/civilization. We either persecute what we hate or ignore what is at the least an inconvenience.
We are no longer a species with an interactive reciprocal community.
As much as we think we can live without social interdependence upon one another, we’re lying to each other and to ourselves.
Organically we must need each other. It must be a healthy cooperative or it fails.
Just like everything of/on this Earth, we are another ecosystem.
Whether we accept this concept and work within its boundaries or not will determine whether we have a future or whether we wither on the vine and go extinct.
