“I am writing this article for the people who have been using fragrances for a long time and who are venturing into new area called fragrances/perfumes from their regular deodorants/body mists”. I am going to share the limited knowledge I gathered from various fragrance enthusiasts and YouTube videos which might be helpful for you guys.

Firstly, I would talk about how a perfume is manufactured and try to clear the misconception few people have regarding the process.

Perfume making process for beginners

It would be very bad on my part if I don’t say this first. France is like the epicenter of perfumes and Grasse, a city in France is perfume capital of the world.

“ Well, Study of perfumes is called Aromachology and a person who studies Aromachology is called by different names which are Aromachologist, perfumer and nose.” I promise, I will try not to use scientific terms in the coming paragraphs.

Below are the basic steps as to how a perfume is made

  • Customer will give you ideas
  • Noses/perfumers will experiment with different smells by using natural ingredients, essential oils and remember these perfumers are usually based out of significant making schools in Switzerland and France. However, some leading brands have their own in-house perfumers
  • This process will take a while(6 months to 1 year) and after the first sample is done, perfumer shares the same with the client and once they agree upon the smell and design, bottle would be released in the market

Now, let me talk about the types of notes which are present in the perfumes. There are 3 types of notes of which the first one is a Top note, second is a heart note and last note is a base note

  1. Top note: first smell that comes from a fragrance belongs to a top note. They are very fresh usually made from citrus and green ingredients and very volatile in nature. Eg: Mandarin, Orange, Bergamot, Mint. Remember don’t take a perfume by just smelling this note”
  2. Middle or heart note : They come right after top notes and are usually made from spicy and floral products. Eg : cinnamon, cardamom, Jasmine
  3. Base note/dry down note: This is the most important note for a perfume as it stays for a longer period on your skin. These are usually Woody, balsamic and sweet. Eg: vanilla, Tonkabean and cedarwood

Now, I will talk about concentrations of perfume and where to apply

Concentrations are divided into 3 types and below percentages may vary

  1. Eau de parfum : contains 10–20% of alcohol and it stays on you for a longer time
  2. Eau de toilette : contains 5–10% of alcohol and it might stay on you for 4–6 hours depending on your skin type and weather conditions
  3. Eau de cologne: contains 2–5% of alcohol and it might stay for a lesser time on your skin

Perfume application

This is very important as most of us who are new to fragrances may apply perfumes just on their clothes instead they will have to apply both on the clothes and their pulse points( wrists on both the hands, behind ears, back of your neck) which will make perfume long lasting

Last but not the least, I will give you my 4 best fragrances for men and women irrespective of season

Top 4 fragrances for men according to me

  1. Bleu de Chanel eau de toilette
  2. Prada L’homme
  3. Creed aventus( this is a niche and very expensive fragrance). Smells terrific and very long lasting
  4. Abercrombie and Fitch Fierce

Top 4 fragrances for women. All of them are mostly fresh

  1. Moschino Fresh couture Eau de toilette ( this is an amazing fragrance. Try it out if you still haven’t. Please forget about the design)
  2. Clinique happy for women
  3. Bvlgari Omnia crystalline
  4. Chanel no 5 parfum

Above mentioned perfumes are my favourites and absolutely no offense to my other favourite brands

This is my first post ever on any platform. Please let me know if there are any improvements/ corrections to be made in my writing and by doing so, will definitely encourage me to take up more topics in the future

Thank you!!!
