Schoolboy Q came out with his 5th studio album on April 26, 2019 and I must say it was one of his best with his use of a more tell it like it is, don’t sugar coat it attitude through his rhymes it made me more of a fan of the album. I always thought Schoolboy Q reminded me more of Biggie, 50 Cent, or even Method Man with his use of vulgar lines and explicit thoughts. In a lot of his music he puts you in his shoes of his past, present, and future life, by taking you on a journey of how fatherhood has changed him, his days back as a youngster being a outstanding football player, or his early entry into the gang culture.

There are a few songs that stands out to me and I feel I have a connection with the messages in the songs such as, “Tales” produced by DJ Dahi. With its melodic guitars and a more rustic drum kit added he raps about his life growing up and dealing with the loss of people close to him, having his daughter at a young age and the responsibilities he had to put more energy into to get him to where he is today, with also including the vision of how many people look at Black Americans as far as caucasians.

But also he comes back to the topic of race in the song, “CrasH” produced by Boi-1Da , he raps, “Upper echelon, but we stand that, So, girl, be proud that your skin black, And be happy, girl, that your hair napped, ‘Cause the school system won’t teach that, Where your father been, you gon’ reach that.” This stood out to me because it shows he is teaching his daughter about the views of the world towards our skin color and the treatment of black women, and the education system white washes everything being taught. In all he had many features I really enjoyed that he sort of tapped into there world of music showing he is diverse and is one of the top 5 rappers in music today.
