Healthy Fat on my Mind
Thomas Fuller stated that “memory is the treasure house of the mind.” Memory enriches our lives, and as we age this ability declines. However, there are ways to keep the brain healthy through diet; for example eating certain types of fats protects our brains and helps us remember beautiful life experiences.
Just what does it mean to have a healthy brain? Well, the brain responsible for many tasks; including memory, information processing, and switching thinking from one topic to another. Diet plays an important role in making sure the brain can keep performing these tasks. Research shows that diets higher in unsaturated fats preserve brain functioning. Research also shows that individuals who eat a lot of saturated fat and cholesterol increase their risk of mental decline. Of course there are other factors that contribute to having a healthy brain, diet is one of those factors that can be controlled.
So, what foods contain brain healthy fats? Fish, especially salmon, herring, trout, sardines, and mackerel provide a powerful punch of brain healthy fat. Try preparing fish a few nights per week. Cooking oils, like olive and vegetable oils are another great source of healthy fat. Swapping butter with olive oil ensures optimal brain boosting benefits. For salads try oil-based dressings instead of creamy ones. Nuts and avocados are yet another great source of unsaturated fat. Nuts are a perfect snack any time of the day. Try including some of these foods into your regular routine.
Remember, all foods can we part of a healthy diet. By eating more healthy unsaturated fats now, you are taking steps to protect your brain in the future!
