The Journey to Fix the Lewis Family

So let me start with telling you a little bit about my family. I am a 37 year old stay at home mom, my husband is 41 and we have two boys, 7 and 4 years old. Our diet consisted of pizza, pasta, burgers and generally a large amount comfort foods. Every night went like this….

”What do you want for dinner?”

“I don’t know, what do you want?”

“I don’t care, something easy”

“We could order out or see what’s in the cabinets”

<Looking through the fridge> “Hmm…most of our produce has gone bad and all the meat is frozen”

“We have pasta and sauce”

“Sure sounds good, then the boys will eat it, hey look Texas Toast, perfect”

Then we would proceed to make the whole box of pasta, shovel tons in our mouth sandwiched around garlic bread. Then the kids would barely eat and we each would finish off their food too. Then we would retire to the couch and go into a carb coma.

I would look in the mirror and hate the way my body looked. I hated the low energy levels and I hated what we were teaching the kids. Not only was I not happy I was constantly worried about my husband. He was considerably heavier and he had weight related health issues. High Blood Pressure, Fatty Liver, the Dr’s were watching his sugars, High Cholesterol. Not to mention that every time he went out to perform yard work, he would come back in with a pale face and incredibly sweaty and basically was out of energy for the day. I became a window checker, I would peek out every few minutes to make sure he was still standing. I was in constant worry that he would collapse out there.

Well anyway, I was watching people on facebook do the 21 day fix and I kept seeing before/after pictures and was intrigued. I looked into it and saw that it was portion control. That it basically is a guide to eating the right amount of foods in the right portions. It also doesn’t make you count calories or points. You just fill the container and dump it on your plate and eat. The only really intimidating thing was the thought of meal planning. I ordered it and figured it was worth a shot, we needed to do something.

I googled and googled and googled to find meal plans. A bunch of the ones out there had you eating the same thing for breakfast and lunch everyday. I knew that wouldn’t fly with my husband. So then I hit up pinterest. I found tons of recipes that looked good. I spent a good amount of time meticulously planning out the week for both me and my husband (we are in two different container brackets). Not going to lie, the first week was rough. Some recipes were good, some were bad. We had to find the sweet spot between eating healthy and enjoying food. Also for the first week your taste buds are still used to tons of processed food and refined sugar so you miss it. You have cravings. Then the exercise, man was that rough. We hurt so much the first week. I just kept telling myself, give it 21 days. If I can commit to 21 days and it sucks the whole time, I know that I gave it my effort and can quit while still feeling proud of myself. It took longer than 21 days to recover from the birth of my children, and that was no picnic, if I can do that and go back for another round, then I can do this.

Enter week two. Food that I never thought was sweet, suddenly tasted so sweet and good. Grapes tasted like candy. The exercise was still work but I wasn’t sore, I felt good and stronger. The meal planning was getting tons easier and we found a handful of recipes that easily replaced our comfort foods, and actually tasted better. And we were using leftovers and all the ingredients in our fridge. There was sooooo much less food waste. Then there was the scale, it kept going down, down, down, but our energy was going up, up, up. By the end of the second week, I wanted to tell everyone and I mean everyone about the change we went through. I truly feel like we have altered our lifestyle. So I signed up to be a coach. I want to help everyone feel like we do. I want to share the recipes I have found, I want to share my meal plans, I want to make it easy and wonderful for everyone. We finished round 1, then did round 2, and then round 3, and then round 4. We are now gearing up to do round 5. My husband has lost over 50 lbs and I have lost 25. I am at the weight I was before children. I never thought I would see that number again. Between rounds we take one or two days to cheat, and enjoy take out. I have learned that I still have no self control over pizza. But knowing that I have tools that I can go back to, is absolutely amazing. If you want to check out our before/afters, please visit
