Kate, I appreciate your perspective and I partially but do not entirely agree with you on this. You see, I am a white woman, with black daughters and though I do not mind being in the sidelines for black people to have a very special moment, I will always sing along to the songs that embrace American blackness. I don’t use the “N” word ever but I love people and excuse my biased love, but I have loved many people who are black very deeply. In fact I am usually the only white person in many places I go, including the classroom I teach in. I will not exclude myself from the fight against injustices that occur against black people and I will sing along to my favorite songs that embody the black American experience because that’s who I am. You may do as you please but please do not advise me in which direction I should go. Thank you.
